BATHROOM AND MUDROOM DESIGN - MOUNT VALLEY PROJECT

If you've been following along on the Mount Valley Project, you know that it's a semi-custom new build at the base of the majestic Wasatch Front Mountain Range, near Salt Lake City Utah. Before construction started I worked for several months with the clients going through the rooms of the house while the project was still on paper, and in the planning phase.

We perfected, we designed, and we perfected and designed some more until we had each of the rooms the best they could be. We continued this process even after the ground was broken for the project. In most of the rooms we made slight adjustments to the floor plans to improve the spaces and to accommodate the clients' objectives for each room.

GUEST BATH & MUDROOM

When it came down to the design of the mudroom and the bathroom immediately adjacent to it, the focus was primarily on the cabinet design. Since the bathroom is the only one on the main floor, the clients wanted it to be especially nice given that it would also serve as the guest bath. Additionally, it needed to be as accessible as it could be to accommodate someone using a walker or chair.

I started the design process adjusting the floor plan so there was more accessibility at the toilet and shower. From there I worked on the cabinet design ranging from an open console to one with all closed storage.

CABINET DESIGN SELECTION

In the end the clients choose Option B but added an arched detail to the splash. As you can see it turned out beautifully.

MUDROOM DESIGN

For the mudroom, again I focused on the cabinet design with the intent of providing an abundance of practical storage for back packs, shoes and sports gear.

MUD ROOM WATER FOUNTAIN NICHE

As the project progressed, the clients added a wall-mounted drinking fountain niche in the design which is one of my favorite features in the space. Not only is it a beautiful addition but it's perfect, yet practical and functional for a house full of kiddos.

FINISH MATERIAL AND COLOR SELECTIONS

On one of my trips to Utah, I worked with the clients to select tiles, counter tops, colors and finishes and fixtures. It's incredibly rewarding to see the vision go from being on paper to gorgeously built and executed spaces

THE TAKE AWAY

  • As soon as possible for your new build projects, bring a skilled and experienced spatial designer on the project to help you get the best possible version of your new home.

  • Don't make the mistake of waiting too long to hire a designer for your project. Unfortunately, often people don't think about including an interior designer until they are ready to pick colors and finishes. Involve them sooner than later. They will add tremendous value to your project..

  • Did you notice how nicely the two spaces flow together? Using the same flooring in both the mudroom and bath made all the difference with expanding the sense of space.

  • Additionally placing the floor tile on the diagonal made it more dynamic and helped to make the relatively narrow spaces feel wider.

  • There is a beautiful repetition and rhythm of colors and finishes between the two space. Nothing is overly matched but instead curated and done in such a way that increases the sense of continuity and refinement.

  • Be sure to include room in your budget for custom cabinets. Besides adding beautiy and quality, they will help you get the most out of your space by planning just the right kind of storage for your needs.

Check back soon to see more about this project. I have files full of beatiful photos to share.

Cheers!
